Efficient hunting of engine valve technology can be endless trips to cam timings, various combustion cycles, and lift and duration adjustments.

The Camcon approach to valve timing is very different. This is called Intelligent Valve Technology and utilizes a valve that is not connected to the crankshaft, so that the valve itself can operate independently.

                 In addition, each valve has its own small camshaft, in contrast to the larger single or double camshafts usually found to control the entire valve bank. A miniature camshaf is controlled by an electric motor, and that interaction tells the valve how to behave.

Settings allow for precise (and timely) changes to lift and duration, which describe the number of open valves and how long they remain open.

There is no compromise found for engines that want low-end power, fuel savings in a certain range of rotation, or have emission requirements at the top end where the engine wants to spin.

For automakers, the ability to adjust the valve time under a vehicle the operation allows power balance, emission control, and proper fuel economy. When needed, such as during heavy throttle loads, the engine adjusts the timing of the valve for a more aggressive combination of air and fuel and provides more power.

 An opposite situation will occur during a partial throttle application. When vehicles maintain a consistent speed on the road, for example, the valve timing will be focused on producing the best possible fuel savings.
Although all of these adjustments are controlled by electronic sensors, the actual valve adjustment is mechanical.

This is not a variable valve time. This is possible for unlimited valve timing. Camcon has tested the system for thousands of hours on a dyno engine, according to a report on the New Atlas. At present, the company is working to combine multi-valve arrangements but has seen an increase in CO2 emissions for the Ingenium Jaguar engine which serves as the basis for testing.

Beyond the basic on-the-fly valve timing, Camcon says it can run the engine as if it were a two-step arrangement. In turn, it will potentially double the power output for a short burst. At the other end of the spectrum see the engine running as if it were 12-stroke. 
That would allow for extraordinary profits in the fuel economy space.

At present, more testing is needed before automakers start incorporating this technology into their own machines. But this is automotive technology that is noteworthy.
